Diskmags, Game Development, Demos

Since my childhood I have been actively interested in all ways how computers can be used for creative purposes, be it non-interactive art (music, graphics, animations, demos), interactive art (games), literature (diskmags), etc. I have edited a diskmag myself (on which I received a lot of positive feedback throughout several years), I have created a couple of games, and I have also coded a few small demos (intros). My interest is not limited to the demoscene, there are many more creative computer subcultures these days. However, the demoscene has been an important interest of mine as my diskmag focused on it content-wise.

Logic and Computation

Automata theory, the theory of formal languages, computability theory and complexity theory are my favourite subjects of computer science. In my studies, I also focused on algorithms and data structures.

I am also interested in how computers can be used for scientific research and for conducting in-silico experiments. My ultimate goal is the simulation of an entire organism.

Computational Physics

If I had been able to keep studying for several more years, I would have loved to obtain a degree in physics in addition to my degrees in medicine and computer science. To my mind it is these three areas of science where most progress is being made these days. As a matter of fact, I am earning my living working at a company that specializes in computational physics.

Medical Science

Pathophysiology and Biochemistry

I am more interested in the molecular biological and biochemical aspects of medicine than in anything else related to this field. In my own research, I focused on endocrinology, immunology, microbiology and genetics in context of psychiatric and internistic conditions (severe mental diseases, infectious diseases and cancer).

In my most important paper so far, "Model approach for stress induced steroidal hormone cascade changes in severe mental diseases", my co-authors and I published and defended our idea that severe mental diseases might be related to, if not even caused by, alterations of the human steroidal hormone cascade.
In a systematic literature study, we collected plenty of evidence of characteristic alterations in both patients afflicted with severe mental diseases and in marathon runners experiencing mild (physiological) stress. We found that some alterations appear in both groups, while others appear only in one of the two groups. This resulted in our proposition of a biological model that explains how severe mental diseases might be caused by characteristic changes of the concentrations of particular hormones, including testosterone, estradiol, androstenediol, androstanediol, dehydroepiandrosterone, cortisol, aldosterone, progesterone etc.
We believe that severe mental diseases (as well as infectious diseases and perhaps even cancer) can be treated by converting steroid hormones that are released as stress reactions into other steroid hormones that boost immunity.

The Big Picture

Metaphysics and Epistemology

My greatest interest of all is to understand how the world works, who we are, why we are here, what the purpose of our existence is, and so on. It is the greatest challenge to the human mind to find sound answers to these questions! Epistemology is related to metaphysics and deals with the question what, if anything at all, we are able to learn and be sure about that we know. I spent a lot of time thinking about this in my days as a university student.

Cognition and Personality

This is a broad term that encompasses intelligence theory, psychometrics, neuroscience and other things. I have been spending a lot of time especially on intelligence testing and on getting to know what people who score very high on these tests are like. Moreover, I was particularly interested in personality psychology during my student years as I wanted to know the reasons why human beings are so different, and what the differences exactly are. I am especially fond of Carl Gustav Jung's personality theory and the psychological functions the existence of which he postulates.

Politics, History, Geography

I know quite a lot about all of the countries in the world despite having actually been in few, and I am able to retrieve all countries (except a few small islands) on a world map. There are loads of good books on these matters. Also, I particularly enjoyed long talks with my father on political philosophy when he was still alive. He knew pretty much about all the different ideologies there are. I also enjoy listening to all sorts of national anthems and political songs.
